Squash Blossom Necklace Available at Nordstrom

Kim and I were inspired to create this necklace from a Silver and Turquoise Native American Squash Blossom necklace my Mom used to wear in the 60s. She would wear hers with a backless suede fringe halter top and painted on bell bottoms. Need to dig up that photo! To celebrate this idea, we are starting a series of Blog and Facebook posts that celebrate American made products that combine great design and quality. We will celebrate all products from food to fashion.

To kick off the series we will start with Heath Ceramics based in Sausalito, CA. We truly believe this company embodies everything that we strive to achieve with our small business: history, values, great design, and high quality.

Collection of Heath Ceramics

My first introduction to Heath Ceramics was in the 1970′s when my mother discovered their studio factory in Sausalito, CA. She came home with an entire collection of tableware. The design and quality spoke to her.

I grew up eating home-cooked meals off the Rim Collection which is still in production in the same Sausalito factory to this day. I have witnessed the high quality and durability of their products. My mom once said, “My Heath is so sturdy that it survived my daughters’ teenage years”!

Now that’s quality.

Heath Rim Collection

Six years ago my mother and I visited the Heath Ceramic factory so I could create my wedding registry. It was an amazing day to be there with my mother, surrounded by the gorgeous hand crafted tableware for which I have a strong nostalgia for. It was a very special day.

Now, I strive to cook fresh, healthy home-cooked meals for my family, just as my mother did. And I proudly serve every meal on my Heath table ware.

This history of quality work is possible thanks to Edith Heath. She founded Heath Ceramics in the 1940′s! The FOURTIES! Can you believe it? Her designs and quality craftsmanship are relevant today. She is an inspiration if ever there was.

“Edith Heath (1911-2005) founded Heath Ceramics in the mid-forties when, following her one-woman show at San Francisco’s Palace of the Legion of Honor, her pieces were picked up for sale at Gump’s of San Francisco. For the past half-century, Edith’s life was dedicated to the craft of ceramics and the skill of the artisan. This passion, along with the legacy of her work in stoneware clay body and glaze development, gives Heath its unique place in ceramics today. As a result of Edith’s timeless and unique design sense – many of her pieces live in the permanent collections of museums such as the MOMA in New York City.”

We highly recommend visiting the Heath Ceramic website. And if you are lucky enough to be in the San Francisco Bay area you can visit their shop in the San Francisco Ferry Building or their Factory Studio/Store in Sausalito, CA. They also have a retail location in LA.
